Sharjah Shuts Roads for Rail, Motorists Left with Salik Bills
Commuters travelling between Dubai and Sharjah have a new challenge on their daily route. Starting July 1, the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) has closed a major road section connecting Mleiha Road to the Sharjah Ring Road. The closure is expected to last until August 30, 2025, as part of Etihad Rail construction works.
The temporary shutdown has already led to longer commute times. Drivers who once took these free routes must now use alternate paths—many of which pass through Dubai’s Salik toll gates.
Motorists Feel the Pinch
For daily drivers, the impact is immediate. What was once a smooth ride now involves additional stops, detours, and Salik charges. Those travelling from central Sharjah to Dubai via Al Wahda Street or University City Road now encounter tolls they previously avoided.
The SRTA has issued guidance on alternate routes and advised commuters to plan their journeys carefully. Despite the inconvenience, officials say the decision was necessary for the timely completion of the national rail network.
A Step Toward Greener, Faster Transport
The disruption is part of a bigger plan. The Etihad Rail network is set to connect all seven emirates, linking key cities like Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. Once complete, the rail system will offer faster, cleaner, and more reliable travel across the UAE.
In the long run, residents can expect improved connectivity and less road traffic. However, in the short term, these closures mean more time spent on the road—and more money spent on tolls.
Authorities say the road closures are temporary but essential. The segment near University City and Mleiha Road is a crucial part of the rail construction zone.
Safety First, Even in Detours
SRTA has also stressed the importance of road safety during this period. With detours and increased traffic on alternate routes, they are urging motorists to follow signage and drive cautiously.
Extra patrols have been deployed to monitor traffic conditions and assist with route management. Commuters are encouraged to use navigation apps that reflect real-time road closures and traffic changes.
The authority assures the public that all work is being done under strict safety protocols. Coordination with Etihad Rail aims to ensure the project progresses without unnecessary delays.
