Abu Dhabi is making waves in the world of autonomous vehicles! Starting Wednesday, November 27, 2025, Uber users in the UAE capital can enjoy fully driverless robotaxis. This is thanks to a groundbreaking partnership with WeRide, a China-based Company.

The launch marks a major milestone as Uber brings driverless robotaxis to the Middle East for the first time.

A Major Step in Autonomous Transportation

Uber has been expanding its autonomous vehicle offerings for years. Now, it’s launching in Abu Dhabi as its fourth market. This brings driverless robotaxis to the Middle East, following previous launches in Austin, Phoenix, and Atlanta.

Riders in Abu Dhabi can now book a WeRide robotaxi by selecting UberX or Uber Comfort. Unlike before, the vehicles now operate without a safety driver on board.

The Partnership That Made It Happen

Uber announced its partnership with WeRide in September 2024. By December 2024, the companies began offering autonomous rides with a safety operator in Abu Dhabi. Now, the full driverless robotaxi service is available.

The launch will primarily take place on Yas Island, where users can select the autonomous ride option in the app. Uber’s big push into autonomous vehicles is part of a broader strategy. The company has also teamed up with Waymo, Lucid, and Nuro to develop autonomous technologies.

The aim is to offer driverless robotaxis in cities around the world. In addition to Abu Dhabi, Uber plans to expand to 15 more cities, including some in Europe.

Global Expansion of Driverless Technology

WeRide has already launched complete driverless robotaxi services in China. Cities like Beijing and Guangzhou are among the first to benefit. Uber’s global expansion continues to pave the way for autonomous vehicles to become mainstream.

In September, Lyft announced a deal with Waymo to launch robotaxis in Nashville by 2026. Uber’s competitors are also embracing the autonomous ride-hailing model. As the demand for driverless robotaxis grows, cities around the world are exploring the technology’s potential.

What’s Next for Abu Dhabi’s Driverless Robotaxi Service?

In Abu Dhabi, driverless robotaxis will operate in select areas of Yas Island. Users can increase their chances of a robotaxi ride by choosing the autonomous option in the app. The app also offers support during the ride via an in-vehicle tablet.

Conclusion

Abu Dhabi is now home to driverless robotaxis, ushering in the future of autonomous transportation. This new service shows Uber’s dedication to innovation. It also helps shape the future of global transport.
