Sharjah Truck Driver Caught Hiding Plate With Mud

Sharjah Police have arrested a heavy vehicle driver who tried to evade traffic monitoring systems by obscuring his license plate. The driver covered his truck’s registration plate with mud to avoid detection by traffic cameras. 

Police said he obscured the plate while attempting to enter several roads where trucks are prohibited. Sharjah applies route- and time-specific restrictions to heavy vehicles, depending on the road.

Sharjah Monitoring System Tracks Down Driver

Sharjah Police said its traffic monitoring system detected and tracked the truck despite the obscured plate. The network uses surveillance cameras and modern digital technology to detect and track vehicles. Specialist teams then carried out searches and field follow-up operations before identifying the truck and arresting its driver. 

The Police said its monitoring network covers roads across the emirate and helps identify traffic offenders. They warned that concealing license-plate details would not prevent authorities from detecting offenders.

Severe Legal Penalties Under Federal Law

Article 34 of Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 sets penalties for several forms of license-plate misuse. Offenders may face imprisonment, a fine of at least AED 20,000, or both for the following license-plate offenses:

• Forging or imitating a license plate, or using a forged or imitated license plate.
• Distorting, obliterating or altering license-plate data while the plate is being used for its intended purpose.
• Allowing another person to use a license plate while knowing it has been obliterated, defaced or altered.
• Transferring a license plate from one vehicle to another without formal approval from the Licensing Authority.
• Installing a license plate, or assisting with its installation, contrary to the Decree-Law and its Executive Regulations.

Fleet operators should ensure drivers understand the routes, timings and traffic rules that apply to heavy vehicles.
