Self-Driving Taxis Take Over Al Reem and Al Maryah – Would You Ride One?

0 88

Abu Dhabi has taken a major step toward futuristic mobility. Self-driving taxis are now operating on Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands. These autonomous vehicles are part of a trial phase under the Abu Dhabi Smart Mobility initiative. The project is led by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) in collaboration with Bayanat and TXAI.

How the Self-Driving Taxis Work

The taxis are electric and fully autonomous. Each vehicle uses advanced AI and sensors to navigate the roads safely. For now, a safety operator sits behind the wheel, just in case human control is needed. You can book a ride using the TXAI app, which is available on both iOS and Android.

The app allows users to call a self-driving taxi in real time, track its arrival, and pay for the trip digitally. Currently, the service covers key stops across Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands. That includes malls, offices, residential towers, and public spaces.

Who Can Use Them?

Anyone! Whether you’re a tourist, a resident, or a commuter working on the islands, you can book these taxis. The rides are part of a trial phase, so they are currently free or low-cost, encouraging the public to try them out.

The self-driving taxis are especially convenient during peak hours when regular taxis are hard to find. They operate daily from morning till late evening.

Safety First, Always

Many residents might wonder: Are self-driving taxis really safe? According to Bayanat, the answer is yes. The vehicles have been tested under strict safety protocols. They use cameras, radar, and LiDAR technology to detect obstacles, pedestrians, and other vehicles.

In case of any issue, the on-board safety operator can take full control of the car. So far, the trial phase has recorded zero incidents. Officials also stated that these taxis have completed hundreds of rides during testing with high customer satisfaction.

Abu Dhabi’s Vision for Smart Mobility

This launch is not just about fancy technology—it’s about long-term vision. The DMT aims to reduce traffic congestion and carbon emissions through smart transport solutions. Self-driving taxis play a key role in this. They are electric, efficient, and reduce reliance on human drivers.

The move aligns with the UAE’s wider sustainability and innovation goals, such as the UAE Vision 2031.

Abu Dhabi plans to expand the self-driving fleet if the trial succeeds. Future phases may include more districts like Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and even mainland areas.

Conclusion

The arrival of self-driving taxis on Al Reem and Al Maryah Islands marks a bold step into the future. With real-time app booking, safe operations, and zero emissions, these taxis offer a glimpse into tomorrow’s transport.
