Not every short journey in Dubai fits neatly around a Metro station or fixed bus stop. For commuters covering the final stretch between home, work and public transport, Bus On Demand offers a flexible first- and last-mile option.

Rather than following a fixed route, passengers request a shared ride through the app. They enter their pickup point and destination, and the app directs them to a nearby meeting point while matching them with riders travelling in a similar direction.

RTA Bus On Demand Dubai expanded again in August 2026, adding Al Satwa, Al Quoz and Mirdif. The service now covers 20 areas with a fleet of 55 buses.

Dubai’s Bus On Demand service uses app-booked shared minibuses across designated areas.

Here is where the service operates, what it costs, how booking works, and what passengers should check before travelling.

How Dubai’s Bus On Demand Service Actually Works

Dubai Bus On Demand is an app-based shared minibus service within Dubai’s public transport network.

Passengers request rides through the Dubai Bus On Demand app instead of waiting for a bus on a fixed route.

Its main role is first- and last-mile transport. For example, a commuter could use it to cover the gap between a residential community and a Metro station. Passengers planning a wider journey can also check our guide to Dubai Metro routes, timings, and tickets.

RTA says the app shows:

  • Bus location
  • Seat availability
  • Estimated arrival time
  • Estimated journey time
  • Pickup information
  • Trip fare

Once the booking is confirmed, passengers go to the assigned pickup point and board the minibus. RTA says the service operates within designated areas and uses the app to connect passengers with nearby pickup points.

Unlike a taxi, the service is not necessarily door-to-door. The app may direct passengers to a nearby pickup point and drop them off a short walk from their requested destination.

Because rides are shared with passengers heading in similar directions, the vehicle may make other stops during the journey.

The 20 Dubai Areas Now Covered by Bus On Demand

RTA currently lists 20 areas covered by the service:

  • Al Barsha 1, 2 and 3
  • Al Nahda
  • Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Dubai Academic City
  • Business Bay
  • Al Rigga
  • Port Saeed
  • Downtown Dubai
  • Al Karama
  • Oud Metha
  • Barsha Heights
  • Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC)
  • Al Mankhool
  • Al Qusais
  • Al Warqa
  • Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC)
  • Dubai Investment Park (DIP)
  • Al Satwa
  • Al Quoz
  • Mirdif

The network reached 20 areas after RTA added Al Satwa, Al Quoz, and Mirdif in August 2026. The expansion also increased the fleet to 55 buses.

However, coverage can vary within each district, so passengers should check the app to confirm whether their exact pickup point and destination are served.

What You Pay: AED 2, AED 5, or AED 7

The Bus On Demand fare is separate from standard Dubai Metro and public bus fares.

Trip Type Fare
Standard trip AED 5 per passenger
Each additional passenger in the same booking AED 4
Interzone trip AED 7 per passenger
Trip within the Business Bay zone AED 2 per passenger

RTA allows passengers to book for up to six people in one ride.

A standard booking for three passengers would therefore cost AED 13: AED 5 for the first passenger and AED 4 for each of the two additional passengers.

Business Bay has a lower fare than the standard service. RTA reduced the fare there to AED 2 from 20 December 2024, and the current service page still lists that price.

When Crossing Into Another Zone Costs More

Bus On Demand supports selected interzone journeys. RTA lists a standard interzone fare of AED 7 per passenger, although the service operator currently advertises AED 5 promotional fares on several connections.

Interzone travel is limited to selected neighbouring service zones, not all 20 areas.

Available interzone journeys depend on the routes available through RTA and the options shown in the app. Passengers should enter their starting point and destination before travelling to check whether the journey is available.

The app also shows the fare before confirming the booking.

Why There Is No Single Timetable for All 20 Areas

Unlike the Metro and conventional public bus network, RTA’s current Bus On Demand service page does not list a single timetable for all 20 service areas.

RTA’s current service page does not publish weekly operating hours for the expanded 20-area network. Passengers should therefore check the Dubai Bus On Demand app before travelling to confirm whether buses are available at their preferred time.

The service operator currently lists hours of 5 am to midnight Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 5 am to 1 am the following day on Friday, and 8 am to midnight on Sunday. However, that page still shows the earlier 17-area network, so passengers should confirm availability in the app before travelling.

Check the app before an early-morning or late-night trip, particularly in the three areas added in August.

What Happens After You Book a Ride in the App

Passengers book the service through the Dubai Bus On Demand app.

RTA lists the following booking steps:

1. Download the App

The Dubai Bus On Demand app is available for Android and iPhone.

2. Register

Create an account and enter the information required to activate the service.

3. Add a Payment Method

Passengers can add payment details or purchase Ride Credits within the app.

4. Enter the Journey

Select the starting point and destination.

5. Check the Available Ride

The app can display the bus location, seat availability, estimated arrival time, and expected travel time.

6. Book and Board

Confirm the journey, go to the assigned pickup point, and board the vehicle when it arrives.

RTA’s current service page follows this same process, from app registration through checking vehicle availability and booking the ride.

How Far Ahead Can You Reserve a Bus?

RTA describes Bus On Demand as an on-demand service booked through its app rather than from a fixed bus stop.

RTA does not currently publish a standard advance-reservation window on its service page.

Use the app to check what rides are available when you plan to travel.

For time-sensitive journeys, allow a buffer: the pickup time shown in the app is an estimate, not a scheduled bus departure.

Paying by Nol Card, Bank Card or Ride Credits

RTA accepts credit cards, debit cards, and Nol cards, and you can also purchase Ride Credits through the app.

RTA lists credit cards, debit cards, and Nol cards, while its booking instructions also allow passengers to purchase Ride Credits through the Dubai Bus On Demand app and use them for trips.

RTA does not list cash as an accepted payment method.

One point is particularly important for regular Metro and bus users: paying with a Nol card does not integrate the Bus On Demand journey into the normal Metro or Dubai Bus fare.

RTA states that passengers must pay separately for each Bus On Demand trip.

Why Dubai Is Expanding Bus On Demand

The service is becoming a larger part of Dubai’s first- and last-mile transport network.

According to the Government of Dubai Media Office, Bus On Demand carried 984,929 passengers in 2025, up from 417,315 in 2024, representing growth of around 136%.

RTA reported further ridership growth in the first half of 2026. RTA recorded 527,000 passengers in the first half of the year, up 25.1% from the same period in 2025. June alone accounted for 105,990 riders.

RTA has responded by expanding coverage and increasing the fleet. The service grew from 17 areas and 49 buses after the May expansion to 20 areas and 55 buses by August 2026.

Bus On Demand complements the Metro and fixed-route buses by serving first- and last-mile journeys. Instead, Bus On Demand supports Dubai’s wider last-mile transport strategy by helping close the gap between public transport services and homes, workplaces and other destinations that may sit beyond a convenient walk.

For passengers facing a longer walk between home, work and a transport station, the service provides another first- or last-mile option.

Where Bus On Demand Works Best, and Where It Does Not

At AED 5 for a standard ride, Bus On Demand costs more than many regular public-transport journeys but offers more flexible pickup than a fixed-route bus.

The main difference is route flexibility within supported zones. Instead of relying entirely on a fixed route, passengers can request a shared minibus journey within supported areas and use it to connect with Metro stations, offices, residential communities, and other destinations.

It is less useful when a fixed bus already runs directly between the same points or when a passenger needs door-to-door transport.

Coverage remains limited to selected parts of Dubai; passengers may still need to walk to an assigned pickup point, and service levels can vary by area and time of day.

A conventional RTA bus may therefore make more sense when an established route already serves the journey directly. A taxi may also be more suitable when door-to-door travel or a tightly controlled arrival time matters more than price.

For shorter journeys within its service zones, Bus On Demand offers another option between fixed-route public transport and door-to-door travel.

The key limitation remains coverage: check the app before travelling to confirm that your pickup point, destination, and preferred time are available.
