Mercedes Revives the G-Class Cabrio, Roof Optional, Attitude Standard

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabrio is making its legendary comeback after disappearing from Mercedes showrooms over ten years ago! This isn’t just another rumor or wishful thinking from off-road enthusiasts who missed the iconic open-top SUV. Mercedes has officially confirmed that a brand new convertible G-Wagon is coming straight from their specialized factory in Austria.

The German luxury giant released shadowy teaser images that show the unmistakable boxy silhouette we all love so much. The timing couldn’t be more perfect for this announcement, as Mercedes just celebrated building its 600,000th G-Class last month.

That incredible milestone came exactly 46 years after the very first G-Wagon rolled off the production line back in 1979. Sure, there was that ultra-exclusive Maybach Landaulet version in 2017, but only 99 lucky buyers got their hands on one. The current-generation G-Class, launched in 2018, never received the convertible treatment that fans desperately wanted to see.

What Makes This G-Class Cabrio Different From Before

This new convertible looks completely different from the old G-Class Cabriolet that disappeared over a decade ago without warning. The teaser images suggest a Landaulet-style design with roof edges that extend all the way to the rear section.

The previous generation Landaulet had a much shorter soft top that only covered the front seats properly. Based on what we can see, this new model will likely feature four doors, rather than two. That makes perfect sense since the current G-Wagon only comes in a four-door configuration across all trim levels.

Don’t expect this G-Class Cabrio to be as extreme as the old Maybach Landaulet with its massive portal axles. The new convertible is likely to be based on the standard G550 model, featuring a folding fabric roof system.

Mercedes will likely offer it with the standard gasoline engine, rather than the new electric G580 that was recently launched. Global markets might also get the G450d diesel version with the same convertible roof treatment for better fuel economy.

When Can You Actually Buy One

Mercedes has not officially revealed the exact debut date, but our experts predict that the G-Class Cabrio will be launched before the end of 2025. Sales should begin sometime in 2026 across nearly every market worldwide, including the United States, where demand remains strong.

The company confirmed global availability, indicating that this won’t be a limited regional release, unlike some previous models. Pricing details remain under wraps, but expect to pay a significant premium over the standard G550 model.

The regular four-door G550 currently starts at $149,400 including destination fees, so the cabrio will definitely cost more. Given the specialized roof mechanism and limited production numbers, a price increase of $20,000 to $30,000 seems reasonable for this treatment.

Conclusion

After years of speculation and numerous custom builds from aftermarket tuners, Mercedes is finally delivering what we’ve wanted. The return of the G-Class Cabrio represents a perfect blend of classic off-road capability and open-air luxury driving.

This announcement proves that sometimes good things really do come to those who wait patiently for them. What are your views on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabrio? Let us know in the comments below. For more exciting industry insights, keep following the Arabwheels Blog.
