The long-awaited McLaren SUV is finally on its way. It will debut in 2028 with a hybrid V8 engine. At a recent global dealer event in the UK, McLaren previewed a clay model of the SUV. The internal codename is P47.
This upcoming model will feature five seats, four doors, and AWD. These are firsts for the British automaker.
A Sculpted Performance SUV with Presence
According to attendees, the McLaren SUV is sculpted, muscular, and impossible to ignore. Its silhouette is similar to that of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT, but slightly larger and more aggressive. The design features flush-split headlights, a large rear spoiler, and an aerodynamic diffuser.
It also rides on massive 24-inch wheels, giving it a strong road presence and a sporty stance. Inside, the P47 will offer more space and practicality than any McLaren before it. Although full details are pending, the hybrid system will not be a plug-in. Instead, it focuses on pure performance.
The electric motors will assist the turbocharged V8 engine, delivering instant response and added power.
A Larger Plan for McLaren’s Future
The McLaren SUV is part of a broader product strategy set to unfold through 2028. Since 2024, McLaren has planned to launch one new vehicle each year. In 2027, a new mid-engine coupe will arrive with nearly 800 hp and a hybrid V6 setup.
This car, codenamed P34, will sit above the Artura in price and performance. Also in 2027, McLaren will release the 788HS, a final edition of the 750S, limited to 200 units. Buyers can expect unique features such as a roof scoop and taller rear wing, available in coupe and convertible formats.
Other upcoming models include a grand tourer with 2+2 seating and a W1 hypercar convertible.
Backed by New Ownership and Vision
The SUV project follows McLaren’s recent acquisition by CYVN Holdings, based in Abu Dhabi. The investment group also owns British EV startup Forseven, which has since merged with McLaren. McLaren CEO Nick Collins previously hinted at a car with “more than two seats.”
That hint now makes perfect sense. While a full-electric McLaren is still in development, it is not a near-term priority. Instead, McLaren is focusing on hybrids and expanding into new vehicle categories. The upcoming McLaren SUV will position the brand alongside rivals like Ferrari, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini.
Conclusion
The 2028 debut of the McLaren SUV marks a bold new chapter for the performance icon. With a hybrid V8, AWD, and standout design, this SUV will bring supercar energy to new roads. What do you think about McLaren joining the SUV game? Let us know in the comments below.
