Dubai’s population has been skyrocketing since 2023, and authorities have concluded that this high population comes with a higher risk of road accidents.
A new program using AI and big data is being developed by the Road and Transport Authority (RTA) to detect drivers’ scores based on road accidents, black points, and vehicle fines. This program is said to be under testing, and a decision on its usage will be made shortly.
This program’s sole purpose is to improve the driving habits of rash drivers. Ensuring safety for all drivers and pedestrians. The “Driver Risk Score” is a new program that evaluates the behavior of risky drivers, helping to prevent road accidents.
Mohammed AlMudharreb’s Input on New AI Solution
This solution was formulated by aggregating internal data sources through a big data platform, as revealed by Mohammed AlMudharreb, Executive Director of the Corporate Technical Support Services Sector and CAIO at RTA.
During a panel discussion on Dubai AI week on Monday, Mohammed AlMudharreb said, “Drivers can put in Emirates ID and driving license, and the solution will tell you how risky you (driver) are as an individual, looking at your behavior, traffic fines, and various elements that’ll define your score. This will be beneficial for car insurance companies.”
Official Explains the Factors of the New AI Solution
The official at the RTA Kiosk, showcasing the solution, stated, “These scores are calculated based on three factors: Fines, traffic accidents, and black points. Based on these, we calculate the scores of each driver into three categories: Low, medium, and high risk. By analyzing this, we can focus more on a group of drivers who are riskier and require more training. This will help us enhance risky drivers’ behavior by providing them with more training lessons.”
“For example, insurance companies can use it and price the premiums based on the behavior of each driver,” the official at RTA further explained. Through this initiative, the scores will help minimize road violations and the risk of accidents.
He continues, “We can target people based on their age group by providing more lessons because a risky driver can be a younger person. This is one of the main objectives.”
UAE’s Increase in Population Poses Road Risks
The UAE’s population is increasing rapidly, with 3.926 million people. With population growth comes an enormous surge in traffic. The number of Salik-registered vehicles jumped from 4.013 million in 2023 to 4.382 million in 2024.
For this reason, it’s a significant initiative launched by the UAE and Dubai Authorities to prevent accidents and ensure safety for motorists and pedestrians.
