Dubai’s First Free Driverless Taxis Now on Uber App
Dubai has entered the era of autonomous travel, and it’s starting with a generous offer. Residents and visitors can now book free driverless taxis via Uber, thanks to a partnership between Dubai’s RTA and a self-driving tech firm, WeRide.
The pilot program allows users to enjoy up to 50 complimentary rides, with each trip capped at AED 500. The service operates in select areas to introduce the public to technology that will soon become part of daily life.
Available Areas and Operating Times
The initial rollout is limited to two key neighborhoods: Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. Riders can board or exit at 20 approved locations, including:
- Jumeirah Mosque
- La Mer
- Kite Beach
- Jumeirah Public Beach
- The Four Seasons area
Service runs from 9 am to 4 pm daily, and trained safety drivers monitor vehicles during this trial phase.
How to Book Your Ride in 5 Easy Steps
Booking a free driverless taxi is simple, but it only works inside the coverage zone. Here’s how to get started:
- Open the Uber app while you are in Jumeirah or Umm Suqeim.
- A banner should appear with the offer: 100% off on Autonomous rides until Jan 29, 2026.
- Tap “Book Now” and enter both pickup and drop-off points within the eligible area.
- If your locations qualify, the “Autonomous” ride option will be listed. Select it.
- Confirm your booking. Wait times range from 5 to 20 minutes, depending on demand.
All bookings must start and end within the covered area to qualify for the free ride.
What to Expect During the Ride
The taxis used in the trial are electric and built for shared use. Inside, passengers will find seating for five, including second and third row seats with extra legroom. A trained specialist remains inside the vehicle during this early rollout, although the car drives itself without human input.
WeRide says it currently operates over 100 autonomous vehicles in the region and plans to rapidly expand its fleet. The technology powering these rides has been tested globally and is now being refined on Dubai roads.
Part of a Larger Vision
This trial is part of Dubai’s long-term Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to make 25% of all city trips autonomous by 2030. RTA is currently working with multiple global tech partners, including WeRide, Pony.ai, and Apollo Go, to develop and test driverless solutions.
By offering free first rides, Dubai is encouraging residents to explore the technology, build public confidence, and support long-term adoption.
Conclusion
The launch of free driverless taxis marks an exciting new phase in Dubai’s smart mobility plans. With 50 free rides and convenient booking through the Uber app, this pilot gives everyone a chance to experience the future.
