Motorists Face AED 400 Fine for Fast-Lane Misuse in Dubai

Dubai motorists now risk a fine for misuse of the fast lane if they drive slowly or cruise in the overtaking lane unnecessarily. The RTA, in coordination with Dubai Police, continues to educate drivers on proper use of the left lane.

New alerts now appear on electronic road signs across key highways, reminding drivers to keep the left lane clear unless overtaking.

Fast Lane Is for Overtaking Only

RTA’s message, “Fast Lane for overtaking only,” appears alongside graphics to clearly convey lane priority. Dubai Police emphasised that slow or unnecessary cruising in the fast lane increases the risk of crashes. Drivers who obstruct traffic flow by refusing to yield may face legal penalties and endanger others.

What Dubai Drivers Should Avoid in the Fast Lane

Dubai’s traffic authorities have identified several common mistakes linked to fines for fast-lane misuse. These behaviours can lead to AED 400 penalties and possible enforcement action:

  • Cruising without overtaking: Staying in the fast lane without purpose
  • Driving below minimum speed: Slower speeds frustrate drivers and disrupt traffic flow
  • Not yielding: Blocking faster vehicles, including ambulances or emergency units
  • Tailgating: Pressuring slower drivers without a safe distance
  • Improper use: Delivery bikes using restricted left lanes

Important update for delivery riders:

As of December 1, delivery motorcycles must avoid:

  • The two leftmost lanes on roads with five or more lanes
  • The leftmost lane on roads with three or four lanes

These restrictions do not apply to roads with two or fewer lanes.

Traffic Safety Takes Priority

Brigadier Juma Salem Bin Suwaidan of Dubai Police has warned that even minor infractions in fast lanes can result in dangerous situations. Unsafe overtaking on the right often occurs when slower vehicles fail to give way on the left.

Such patterns increase sudden braking and side collisions, especially during peak traffic periods. Authorities stressed that fast-lane discipline is more than a courtesy; it’s essential to safe road use and smooth city mobility.

Conclusion

Dubai drivers are urged to avoid lane hogging or slow cruising. The fine for misuse of the fast lane is AED 400. Respect lane rules, keep traffic flowing, and help make Dubai’s roads safer for everyone.
