European Car Market Shift: BYD Sits Just 10,839 Units Behind Ford
Chinese automakers are moving rapidly up Europe’s registration rankings, putting several established brands under increasing competitive pressure. Registration figures from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) show BYD reached 234,099 registrations across the EU, EFTA and UK through August 2026.
That impressive total places the brand just 10,839 vehicles behind Ford. BYD registrations across the EU, EFTA and UK surged 144.1% year over year. Meanwhile, Ford registrations tumbled 14.4% to 244,938 units over the same 8-month period.
That puts BYD at roughly 2.5% of the wider EU, EFTA and UK passenger-car market through August. One year ago, the Chinese manufacturer held just 1.1 percent of the market.
Divergent Strategies Reshape European Market Share
BYD’s rapid registration growth has come alongside a broader European lineup spanning battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models. The company continues to introduce new electric cars and plug-in hybrids in key mainstream segments.
Local buyers now find fresh, price-competitive options across most major vehicle categories. Ford, meanwhile, has withdrawn several traditional high-volume passenger-car nameplates from Europe. Ford has ended European production or sales of nameplates including the Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo as it reshaped its passenger-car strategy around profitability.
CEO Jim Farley acknowledged those models were loved by customers, but lacked strong profitability. Models such as the Puma and Kuga now play a larger role in Ford’s European passenger-car range.
European Registration Data Through August 2026
Zoom out, and the numbers reveal how fast the competitive structure is shifting. Traditional volume brands face pressure from multiple new entrants simultaneously. The table below details registration totals across key manufacturers through August.
| Automaker | Jan–Aug 2026 Registrations | YoY Growth (%) | Gap to Ford (Units) |
| Ford | 244,938 | -14.40% | Benchmark |
| BYD | 234,099 | +144.1% | -10,839 |
| SAIC (MG) | 230,290 | +19.7% | -14,648 |
| Chery Group | 207,871 | +279.7% | -37,067 |
| Geely Group | 289,128 | +11.6% | Ahead (+44,190) |
Beyond BYD: Broader Chinese Expansion Gathers Pace
The growth extends beyond BYD. MG parent SAIC reached 230,290 European registrations through August, trailing Ford by just 14,648 vehicles. Geely Group recorded 289,128 registrations, although its ACEA total covers a broader portfolio that includes brands such as Volvo, Polestar, smart and Lotus.
Chery Automobile experienced even faster growth across the continent this year. Chery Automobile, including brands such as Omoda, Jaecoo and Jetour, reached 207,871 registrations, up 279.7% year over year.
Separate Dataforce figures show Chinese brands captured 11.7% of European new-car registrations in August 2026, up from 5.5% a year earlier. That means more than one in 10 new cars registered in Dataforce’s European coverage during August carried a Chinese brand.
Conclusion
The gap between BYD and Ford has narrowed to just 10,839 registrations across the EU, EFTA and UK through August 2026. That is a notable change from a year earlier, with BYD registrations up 144.1% while Ford’s declined 14.4%.
The comparison also reflects a wider shift in Europe’s car market. BYD, SAIC and Chery are expanding rapidly, while established manufacturers are restructuring their ranges around electrification, profitability and changing consumer demand.
Ford is preparing its response. Its partnership with Renault Group will produce 2 Ford-branded electric vehicles based on the Ampere platform, with the first expected in European showrooms in early 2028. The remaining months of 2026 will show whether BYD can close the registration gap with Ford. Still, the larger trend is clear: Chinese manufacturers are becoming a much bigger part of Europe’s mainstream new-car market.
