Abu Dhabi Unveils New Cycling Corridors Along Al Ain Road

0 11

Abu Dhabi is shifting gears toward greener mobility with new cycling corridors connecting the mainland to the capital.

Expanding the Cycling Network Across Abu Dhabi

The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) continues its ambitious push to build a unified cycling infrastructure across the emirate. As part of this expansion, new tracks are now being completed along Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street on the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road.

These corridors seamlessly link with existing routes on Abu Dhabi Island, offering cyclists uninterrupted, safe paths.

Built to high safety and urban design standards, the new tracks include shaded areas, directional signage, and access to facilities that improve the riding experience. DMT’s focus is clear: encourage a healthier lifestyle while delivering a viable alternative to car-based travel.

Why These Cycling Corridors Matter

These additions to the capital’s active transport map offer much more than convenience. The extended network improves access between residential, commercial, and service areas. Officials emphasise the role of cycling corridors in reducing congestion while promoting non-motorised, low-emission transport.

These tracks also support Abu Dhabi’s wider goals under its sustainable city strategy. Cycling infrastructure is gaining momentum in the UAE due to reduced vehicle dependence, lower carbon emissions, and improved air quality capital.

E-Bike & Scooter Rules on Cycling Corridors

To ensure safety and smooth traffic flow, the DMT has outlined clear rules for two-wheeled electric mobility:

  • Allowed: On internal roads <40 km/h, dedicated cycling/e-bike lanes, shared pedestrian–cycling paths
  • Banned: On highways, pedestrian-only routes, and roads >60 km/h
  • Roads with no bike lanes: Ride on the right-hand side if the limit is ≤60 km/h
  • Permits needed: For cycling on roads with speed limits of>60 km/h
  • Ride safe: Obey traffic laws, keep safe distances, and follow designated directions
  • Park smart: Use only designated bike parking areas; don’t block vehicles or walkways

These regulations aim to balance accessibility and road safety, especially as e-bikes and scooters become increasingly popular.

Cycling Corridors Along Al Ain Road: A Key Pillar of Urban Planning

DMT has confirmed that these cycling corridors will continue to expand in phases across both Abu Dhabi Island and its surroundings. Current developments are already visible along Mubarak bin Mohammed Street and Shakhbout bin Sultan Street.

As more corridors are completed, residents can expect a more integrated, safe, and convenient active transport network across the city.  The strategy supports not just environmental goals, but also public health, urban connectivity, and Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a modern sporting destination.

Conclusion

The rollout of new cycling corridors along Al Ain Road is a statement of intent. Abu Dhabi is investing in clean, smart mobility that fits the lifestyle and climate goals of a modern, livable city. What do you think about this development? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
