New RTA Project Smooths Traffic Flow Between Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed another major infrastructure project aimed at easing traffic between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. The improvements were made through key upgrades on Al Meydan Street, one of the city’s important connecting routes.

The main part of this project was the widening of Exit D69. This exit, which connects Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street, was expanded from one lane to two. As a result, the exit can now handle 3,000 vehicles per hour instead of just 1,500. This upgrade has reduced travel time by up to 40% during peak hours.

Less Waiting, More Moving

Before the upgrade, Exit D69 often saw long traffic queues, especially in the morning and evening rush hours. With only one lane, traffic would slow down significantly.

Now, with two lanes, traffic moves much more smoothly. The RTA confirmed that queue lengths have been reduced by almost 50%. This change has made a noticeable difference for daily commuters, improving their driving experience and saving valuable time.

Wider Bridge for Smoother Traffic

The RTA also upgraded the bridge over First Al Khail Road. This bridge now has four lanes in each direction, up from three. Thanks to this expansion, the bridge can now carry 6,000 vehicles per hour instead of 4,500.

This upgrade has improved travel speed across the bridge during busy hours. Previously, it took about seven minutes to cross. Now, it takes only four — a 40% improvement. For people driving between Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, and the surrounding areas, this has been a very welcome change.

A Step Toward a Smarter City

This road improvement project is part of the RTA’s larger plan for 2025. The authority is working on more than 75 similar projects across Dubai. Each one is designed to make driving safer, faster, and more comfortable.

According to the RTA, “The enhancement played a key role in facilitating smoother vehicle movement between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road in both directions.” These upgrades also support Dubai’s long-term goal of becoming a global leader in sustainable and smart transport.
